From Michel de Montaigne The journal of Montaigne's travels in Italy by way of Switzerland and Germany in 1580 and 1581, visiting the Baths at Plommieres:

"The visitors in this place maintain a singular propriety of carriage, and it is reckoned indecent for men to bathe naked or with less clothing than a little jacket, or for women to wear less than a chemise."

From Ronald Hutton Pagan Britain, talking about Roman era curses found in the spa at Bath, requesting help from the gods and godesses:

"More or less typical of those at Bath was one written by Solinus, who sought the aid of Sulis Minerva to recover the bathing suit and cloak with which he had come to the baths fed by her sacred waters, and which had been stolen there."
